Triple Crochet Flower

Hey Rockers!

I’ve had many requests on my Facebook page for a flower tutorial, based on an image that was floating around the internet that didn’t have a url address and/or instructions in English. (I kind of forgot which was the case.) I immediately set to creating one, wrote up the pattern, took some pictures and then…the holidays happened.

I totally meant to have this posted months ago, before the New Year, but that’s how my life goes sometimes. Good intentions and zero follow through. Oh well. Back to the flower. This is similar to the one I used in the images of my Pretty Girl Beanie and Pretty Baby Beanie posts, but the petals have a slightly different shape to them. It took me several tries to get just the right shape, but I think I finally figured it out. I hope you like this flower and and find it useful.

Size: varies

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:
Caron SS or Red Heart With Love
Yarn/tapestry needle

Hook size: H/5.00mm

Key:
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
DC = double crochet
TC = triple crochet

Gauge: none required

Instructions:

Chain 40+1 (small flower), 60+1 (medium flower) or 80+1 (large flower)
Pattern Note: for an even larger flower, add chains in multiples of 10+1 and follow pattern.

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc across, turn.
Row 2: chain 7, skip 4 spaces, dc, [ch 4, skip 4 spaces, dc] repeat across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, [1 hdc, 2 dc, 6 tc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, sl st to dc from previous row] repeat in each ch 4 space from Row 2 across.
Break yarn, leaving 12 inch tail for sewing flower together.

You should now have a long strand of petals that are starting to curl/twist a bit. Now for the fun! Use the long tail to thread your needle.

Begin to roll the petals around, using the yarn needle and tail to secure the petals together as you roll. Be sure to reinforce the shape with a few extra whip stitches as you go.

Finish by securing the last petal. Use the rest of the tail to sew your flower to a hat or other object, or simply finish and weave ends for a detachable flower accent or brooch.

Pattern Note: For a taller flower, roll petals more tightly. For a wider, more flat flower, roll petals more loosely. See the images for clarification.

Entwine Magazine January Cover

Happy New Year Rockers!

2013 was a great year for me personally and for Crochet Rochelle too. My passion for crochet grows daily, as does my idea list for new patterns and projects. There are not enough hours in a day for me to pursue all that I want to accomplish in my crochet work...not if my family wants dinner and clean clothes anyway.

In 2013 I tried new techniques, followed other crochet designers' progress and sites, made some new crochet friends on Ravelry and Facebook, and grew my little blog and Facebook page little bit by little bit. Yesterday, I crossed the 1,000+ fans mark on Facebook and that was very cool.

In October, I received an email from the owner and editor of Entwine Magazine (then called Inspired) asking if I would like to submit a pattern for publication in one of their 2014 issues. I was stunned. And delighted! I did a little dance. Made a little noise. My hubby rolled his eyes, in a supportive way.

I had just finished creating a new hat pattern called the Amelia Cloche that I planned to publish on my blog, inspired by my great-grandma and the style of the 1920's and 30's. So I thought, "hey, why not submit and see what happens?" I called my dearest friend and personal photographer Lisa (Hey Girl!) and begged for help photographing the new hat.

Lucky for me, she also has an adorable 5 year old daughter who was perfect as our model. (And extremely patient.) One thing led to another and the pattern was ready, photos were taken and the whole thing sent off to Entwine Magazine.

Long story short - I landed a spot in the January 2014 issue. Then as icing on my cupcake, the editor emailed me right before New Year's and asked if they could use one of Lisa's images for their cover! Sweetness. That is all. So yeah, I have a pattern published in a digital crochet magazine that other people can purchase and subscribe to. I'm in crochet heaven. Want the pattern?
