Newsboy Baby Hat Pattern

Hey Rockers!

I recently made a few Newsboy Hats for my cousin’s new baby boy. I couldn’t crochet pretty baby beanies now could I? I wanted something soft and easy with a sweet little brim, so I came up with a modernized version of a Newsy Cap or Newsboy Hat, whichever you prefer.

Some people also call this style of hat a fisherman cap. Granted, this crochet pattern doesn’t have the “flat cap” and actually resembles more of a “cadet cap” but I’m still calling it my Newsboy Baby Hat. So there.

This Newsboy Hat is so versatile and fun! Combine all kinds of colors to create a personalized smart looking little hat for any occasion. For boys, I’ve mainly worked it in earth tones, but nautical colors would be great too. For baby girls, I like to use bright cheery colors together or pastel palettes, depending on the mommy’s preferences.

Change up the places in the pattern where I have changed colors to add multiple stripes or color blocking affects too. Play with variegated or self striping yarns too and have fun!

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue.

American Soda Cozy Pattern

Hey Rockers!

A couple of years ago, when I first started creating my own patterns, I came up with a simple soda can cozy in a "Captain America" theme for my brother's birthday. His wife was throwing him an Avengers birthday party so I thought matching soda cozies would be awesome. That's just the kind of sister I am!

(Yes, he is an adult. But really, who doesn't like Captain America and the Avengers?)

Looking back over my soda cozies, I thought this pattern would also be fitting for a Memorial Day picnic or Independence Day barbeque, or any patriotic themed event. Not from the USA? No problem. Just choose colors from your home country's flag and celebrate your way.

This soda cozy fits all standard size soda and beer cans. It also fits most glass beer bottles too. Nice!

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue.

Basic HDC Beanie Pattern

Hey Rockers!

I really wanted to add my pattern for a basic half double crochet beanie this past Wednesday.  The pattern was ready to go, but life through my little family a curve ball - and my five year old son had to have a surgical procedure to remove a nickel from his stomach. Yeah, so that happened. It was bizarre and a little stressful. Anytime a doctor needs to put your kid under general anesthetic and stick a camera down their throat warrants mommy stress. The good news is the nickel was retrieved and the little monster (I mean boy) is back in action, no more nickels for him!

Anyway, back to the basic hdc beanie. I wrote the pattern in 10 sizes from Newborn to Adult X-Large, much like the Basic DC Beanie. I use the basic hdc crochet beanie for many theme hats and special orders. I also used a hdc crochet beanie as the base for my Rapunzel Hat and Kids Pirate Beanie.

This version is flexible and can be used for almost any hat base. One of the nice things about the hdc beanie is a much closer or "tighter" fabric, as compared to the dc beanie which tends to work up a little more loosely. You'll just have to decide whether your particular hat needs a tighter fabric or more loose drape.

There are tons of good basic beanie or hat patterns for free on the internet, at Ravelry and on several crochet bloggers' sites that I enjoy. This is my version and I've found it to be fairly true to size and measurements. I hope you find this pattern useful. If you find an error or have a question please leave a comment here or on Facebook and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Feedback rocks!

If your beanie is too short, add a few extra rows of “hdc around” to add height; too long, subtract 1 – 2 rows of “hdc around” to shorten.

You are all done!

Basic DC Beanie Pattern

Hey Rockers!

I've been meaning to add my pattern for a basic double crochet beanie/hat for ages and ages. This week I made it priority number one! I wrote the pattern in 10 sizes from Newborn to Adult X-Large, took photos and voila - here is a great resource for those of you who make a lot of hats.

I use the basic double crochet beanie for so many character hats and special orders. I also used a double crochet beanie as the base for my Pretty Girl Beanie and Pretty Baby Beanie, which people really seem to like. This version is flexible and can be used for almost any hat base, whether you are crocheting a simple one-color beanie, multicolored or striped cap, ear flap hat or sports cap.

There are MANY great basic beanie or hat patterns for free on the internet, at Ravelry and on several crochet bloggers' sites that I follow weekly. This is just my version, that I've found to be fairly true to size and measurements. I hope you are able to use it to crochet all kinds of fabulous hats. If you do find an error or have a question please do leave a comment here or on Facebook and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I love feedback too!

If your beanie is too short, add a few extra rows of “dc around” to add height; too long, subtract 1 – 2 rows of “dc around” to shorten.

You are all done!

Would a video tutorial help you? Stephanie Darnell from Hats, Hugs, and Hope - a chapter of Crochet for Cancer has created this YouTube video demonstrating how to crochet my Basic DC Beanie. Enjoy!

Reversible Hot Pad Pattern

Hey Rockers,

Looking for something simple to crochet for the kitchen – either for Mother’s Day or as a quick gift you can work up easy-peasy? I’ve come up with a VERY simple hot pad to add some texture and color to your kitchen. Use worsted yarn for crocheting one or two (or several) hot pads. Substitute in cotton yarn to use as pot scrubbers or dish cloths. See how fun that is? Double duty!

Turn the hot pad over to the “wrong” side of your work for a slightly different (but still very cute) texture, or use the cotton version’s “wrong” side to scrub those dishes! Or just sit and admire your pretty little round creation. Enjoy!

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:
Worsted yarn or cotton yarn
Yarn/tapestry needle

Hook size: I/5.50mm

Key:
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
JOIN = sl st to first dc of round
MR = magic ring (tutorial here)
PICOT = ch 3, sl st to first ch
RND = Round
SL ST = slip stitch

Gauge:
4 DC = 1" (length)
2 Rows of DC = 1" (height)

Notes:
Start your first stitch of each round in the same space as your chain.
Join your round to the first DC, not your chain.
Chains do not count as stitches in this pattern.

Instructions:
Rnd 1: Magic Ring, 12 dc, join. (12)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, [2dc in each stitch] around, join. (24)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, [(sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc] around, join. (32)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, [(sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc] around, sc, dc, join. (42)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, [(sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc] around, join. (56)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, [(sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc, sc, dc] around, (sc,dc) in last stitch, join. (68)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, [(sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc, sc, dc, sc, dc] repeat 8x, (sc,dc) in next stitch, sc, dc, sc, dc, join. (78)
Rnd 8: Ch 15, sl st to 1st ch to form loop; [sl st 3, picot] around, join to 1st chain of loop.
Break yarn, weave ends.

You are all done!
